On 23 March 2023, NSTDA hosted an event launching Uplift Thai’s Service Robots and Internet of Things (IoT) to ASEAN. The project - a cooperation between the Broadcasting and Telecommunications Research and Development Fund for Public Interest of NBTC, Software Park Thailand of NSTDA, Electrical and Electronic Products Testing Center (PTEC) of NSTDA, and Software Quality Testing Laboratory (SQUAT) of NECTEC - aims at building capacity of Thai robotic and IoT industries.
NSTDA President Prof. Dr. Sukit Limpijumnong remarked that there are two main types of robots; industrial robots and service robots. Industrial robots – examples of which include robotic arms and AGVs (automated guided vehicles) - are used for manufacturing. Service robots, on the other hand, are designed to assist human to perform specific tasks such as delivery robots and cleaning robots. Robots are versatile and can be developed for various purposes. Their capability and efficiency can be augmented with artificial intelligence (AI), making robotic a fast-growing industry and a main driver of economic growth. Similarly, IoT technology also plays a vital role in multiple industries. It enables smart farming and smart home technology that allows homeowners to control appliances, lights, and other devices remotely using a smartphone or tablet through an internet connection. When market demand for these technologies increases, manufacturers often put the focus on functional development and leave safety and compliance issues for later due to the lack of expertise. This project is introduced to help enterprises to develop products and services that comply with international safety and quality standards, enabling the products to be exported to foreign countries.
Software Park Thailand Director Dr. Pattravadee Ploykitikoon stated that this project offers a service platform catering to robot and IoT companies, enabling them to bring their innovative product and services to ASEAN markets. The services range from innovation development to consultation in both technical and business aspects, infrastructure support, and quality testing and certification. A wide variety of infrastructure available include prototyping lab, fabrication lab and testbed. The platform is the first in ASEAN to offer integrated services for testing and certification of robots and IoT products. The project is funded by the Broadcasting and Telecommunications Research and Development Fund for Public Interest of NBTC.
The launch event also included a special seminar discussing opportunities of Thai service robots and IoT in the global market. Speakers at the seminar were PTEC Director Dr. Kraison Aunchaleevarapan, SQUAT Researcher Dr. Panita Meananeatra, PTT RAISE General Manager Dr. Nipat Rasmekomen, HiveGround Founder & CEO Dr. Mahisorn Wongphati, Thai IoT Association Board Member Mr. Akkarapol Sukta, and Software Park Thailand Director Dr. Pattravadee Ploykitikoon.
