Thailand's APEC host year
Thailand will be the host of Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in 2022. Bangkok was chosen to be the meeting venue and will welcome delegates in November 2022, with “Open. Connect. Balance.” theme.
Five issues that Thailand will be proposing in the meeting including:
(1) freedom of trade and investment;
(2) advancing a digital society;
(3) people’s well-being;
(4) food and agriculture security;
(5) sustainable growth and responsibility (including development of the Bio-Circular-Green economy, or BCG).
Thailand aims to advocate three key points in the meeting:
(1) trade and investment facilitation;
(2) rebooting regional connectivity, particularly the travel and tourism industry;
(3) advancing sustainable, balanced, and inclusive growth through the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy.
One of the objectives is to build capacity in the digital economy, sustainable transportation, renewable energy, low-carbon emissions, innovative waste management, and structural reform to promote inclusive economic participation and access to opportunities.
From the speech by H.E. General Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, at APEC CEO Dialogues on ASEAN’s Place in APEC’s Future On 19 November 2020. He addressed that –
“As the host of APEC in 2022, Thailand will build-on and ensure continuity of the priorities during Malaysia’s and New Zealand’s host years. We will carefully consider the challenges of the post-COVID-19 world in addressing our priorities, including
(1) promotion of free and open trade and investment, and support for the multilateral trading system and regional economic integration; (2) digital transformation; (3) inclusive and sustainable growth, including responsible business conduct, environmental conservation, governance and access to funding; (4) well-being, and (5) food security and agriculture.”
