The National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) recently embarked on an official visit to leading Japanese research organizations, aimed at reconnecting and strengthening its longstanding collaborations with four prominent institutions. The visit, held from January 20–22, 2025, in Tokyo, Japan, focused on further enhancing partnerships with the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).

The primary objectives of the visit included exploring mutual research interests, exchanging knowledge on advancements in science and technology, and aligning collaborative efforts with NSTDA’s mission. This initiative provided NSTDA with invaluable insights into Japan’s cutting-edge research achievements, which can be leveraged to enhance its projects and initiatives. Additionally, the visit facilitated the identification of new opportunities for joint projects and the expansion of NSTDA’s research networks with Japan.

NSTDA’s partnership with NEDO, which began in 2012, has focused on advancing energy solutions to address global challenges. During the visit, the two organizations explored potential collaboration on international demonstration projects to showcase advanced technologies, facilitate knowledge exchange, and develop sustainable solutions to pressing global issues.

During the visit to NIMS, NSTDA discussed opportunities to create a specialized curriculum program in materials science. This initiative would provide Thai students and researchers with access to NIMS’ advanced research infrastructure and esteemed researchers, fostering stronger academic and research ties between Thailand and Japan.

The partnership between AIST and NSTDA, established in 2004, was further strengthened with this visit. This visit marked a significant step in strengthening and reconnecting after the pandemic. An agreement in principle was reached to hold an annual joint seminar with specific themes. The seminar will serve as a platform for researchers from both organizations to share expertise and identify synergies in key research areas such as Net Zero Emission Technologies, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), High-Value Extracts, Biorefinery Innovations, Electric Vehicles (EV), and Fuel Cell Technologies.

At JST, NSTDA executives had the opportunity to update and learn about key multilateral collaboration programs, including the Strategic International Collaborative Research Program (SICORP), e-ASIA Joint Research Program, Sakura Science Exchange Program, and Networked Exchange, United Strength for Stronger Partnerships between Japan and ASEAN (NEXUS), along with the Young Talents Exchange and Capacity Development Program (Y-tec) under NEXUS. These programs are designed to foster international research cooperation and drive innovation across various disciplines. During discussions, NSTDA and JST explored opportunities to align their collaborative efforts with market demands and national priorities, aiming to expand the Japanese market into Thailand. Focus was placed on identifying research areas that address societal challenges while paving the way for market-driven innovations.

This official visit marks a significant milestone in NSTDA’s efforts to strengthen international research collaborations. By reconnecting with leading Japanese organizations, NSTDA has laid the groundwork for impactful partnerships that align with its mission of driving innovation and research excellence. These collaborations will contribute to addressing global challenges while fostering sustainable growth and development in science and technology.
