We are pleased to inform FCDO has launched Research and Innovation for Development in ASEAN Project (RIDA) to support science and innovation collaboration in ASEAN to tackle development challenges. Please find brief summary below:

Funding objectives and expected outcomes:

  • To support institutional partnerships to strengthen engagement on science and innovation on regional development prioritiese., health, climate adaptation, resilience, energy transition, and agriculture. This aligns with the UK-ASEAN Plan of Action.
  • Innovation is defined as not only new tech and tools, but also novel approach to existing tech. The innovation should have the potential to transform how we do things. This means fundamental research is unlikely to be funded unless it has clear pathway to impact. Innovation should consider variables and stakeholders for it to be applied successfully.
  • We will support projects that pilot innovation (including scaling-up), and/or research tackling knowledge gap for innovation (e.g., Affordability and accessibility). It is not a workshop / brainstorm funding, unless there is clear link to practical application.
  • Funding will be prioritised for projects with potential for regional impact, and with partners in ASEAN. If a project targets innovation benefiting one country alone, it is unlikely to be funded.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Project must focus on one or more regional priorities (refer to UK-ASEAN PoA)
  • Project must involve activities in ODA-eligible countries in ASEAN.
  • Application must be submitted by an organization that is eligible to receive and administer funding from the UK Government.

Selection criteria:

  • Emphasis on creative and original thinking, awareness of the innovation ecosystem, societal implications
  • For full criteria – please see information pack.
