Asphalt concrete is a composite material commonly used for constructing and maintaining roads, parking areas, airport runways, sidewalks and sport areas. Despites its high flexibility and durability especially under Thailand’s tropical climate, asphalt’s usage in Thailand is still limited to expansive area because heavy equipment and expertise are required. Although ready-mixed asphalt is now widely available in the market for patching, pothole and repair, this product still requires compaction and time for the material to settle and odor to dissipate.
To increase user friendliness of asphalt concrete, MTEC-NSTDA and Bitumen Innovation Co., Ltd. have co-developed Bicbok, an asphalt floor tile that offers the benefits of asphalt concrete and the convenience of installing. Leading the R&D team was Dr. Pitak Laoratanakul, Senior Researcher of Ceramics and Construction Materials Research Group, MTEC-NSTDA.
Bicbok is available is two sizes, 50cm. x 50cm. and 50cm. x 100cm., with the thickness between 5-30 mm. and a price range of 270-450 THB/sq.m. The product is designed for DIYers. It comes with a self-adhesive backing and can be cut with a box cutter to fit into corners or any desired shape or form. In addition to its DIY features, Bicbok is highly stable and flexible under repeated loads, skid resistant and water impermeable, and therefore offering durability and ease of maintenance and repair.
