NSTDA, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and The Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO) recently organized ANSO International Forum for Green Technology as part of the 14th China Bioindustry Convention held on 10-12 June 2021 in Guangzhou, China. The virtual forum took place on 11 June and aimed to promote the concept of green technology and its contribution to SDGs.
The forum covered wide-ranging topics of circular economy, clean technology and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in green society and creative economy with experts and leaders representing the governments, international organizations, businesses, and academia sharing their knowledge and experience. Providing opening remarks and warm welcome to the audience were ANSO President Prof. Bai Chunli and NSTDA President Dr. Narong Sirilertworakul, President of NSTDA.
The first session had speakers from China, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan and Singapore sharing information on circular economy and biotechnology in their respective institutes and countries. Prof. Zhang Suojiang of IPE-CAS discussed various green recycling technologies and international collaborative projects based on these technologies. NSTDA Advisor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thumrongrut Mungcharoen presented a circular economy roadmap and actions in Thailand, while Dr. Raslan Ahmad of Malaysian Industry- Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT) gave a talk on circular and green economy policy and activities taking place in Malaysia. Dr. Saito Osamu of Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) presented natured-based solution approaches to green and sustainable society and PANCES mode that integrates social and ecological systems, whereas Prof. Cho Nam-Joon of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) shared his work on sustainable materials innovation using pollen as a natural alternative to polymer.
In the clean technology session, Prof. Wang Zheng of RCEES-CAS discussed his work in the area of solar fuel production, specifically on photocatalytic CO2 conversion and water splitting. Dr. Kampanart Silva of ENTEC-NSTDA presented renewable energy research in Thailand and initiatives under ASEAN and APEC collaborations, while Prof. Peter Lund of Aalto University, Finland shared Finnish experience of working toward carbon neutral. To end the session, Dr. Nannan Sun gave a presentation on behalf of Prof. Wei Wei of SARI-CAS on their Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) research and application.
Examples of AI solutions for green and creative economy were presented in the last session, ranging from the green packaging program in Cainiao Company presented by Mr. Liu Yuan, a cultural and biodiversity collection and utilization platform developed by Dr. Thepchai Supnithi of NECTEC-NSTDA and Huawei AI research and its applications in green society by Mr. Liang Dezhi.
The forum was concluded with closing remarks made by ANSO Executive Director Prof. Cao Jinghua and NSTDA Vice President Dr. Lily Eurwilaichitr.
