A Thai company, Bio Inno Tech (Thailand), recently introduced new disinfectant “Agermgo” to the market. The product was based on a disinfectant innovation developed by NANOTEC-NSTDA.
Dr. Warayuth Sajomsang, Principal Researcher of Environmental Nanotechnology Research Team, explained the development of zinc-based disinfectant. Zinc ions are known to exhibit a broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. Because zinc is a trace element found in living organisms, it is considered safe to human and the environment. Therefore, zinc presents an excellent choice for a disinfectant agent. Dr. Warayuth applied chelating technology to stabilize zinc ion and enhance its antimicrobial properties, resulting in a robust zinc-based disinfectant.
The technology was licensed to Bio Inno Tech (Thailand). The company further collaborated with Dr. Warayuth to add an antifungal activity and neutralize the pH with safe chemicals. Benzalkonium chloride and coconut fatty acid were added as a biocide and a cleansing agent, respectively.
Agermgo is effective against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella choleraesuis, H1N1, coronavirus and Aspergillus Niger. The product has been registered with FDA Thailand, the Department of Livestock Development and Thailand Innovation List, the latter of which enables this product to benefit from the government procurement program.
Agermgo was launched in April 2021 with positive response from consumers. The company is planning to introduce the product to ASEAN market in 2023. With this success, Bio Inno Tech (Thailand) and NANOTEC are now developing a hospital-grade disinfectant product.
