The National Science Foundation (NSF) ได้ประกาศ 6 research ideas ใน 10 Big Ideas
(4 ideas คือ process ideas) เพื่อนำทางการวิจัยและลงทุนระยะยาว

NSF และหน่วยงานที่ขอรับทุน โดย NSF ได้อธิบายแนวคิด Big Ideas ว่าเปรียบเสมือนตัวกระตุ้นความท้าทายในการวิจัย ที่เป็นงานวิจัยใหญ่ สร้างสรรค์ใหม่ และมีพันธสัญญาระยะยาว นอกจากนี้ Big Ideas จะดึงดูดการมีส่วนร่วมเชิงสร้างสรรค์จากนักวิจัยจำนวนมาก ข้ามพรมแดนวิทยาศาสตร์ และนำไปสู่ผลกระทบทางวิทยาศาสตร์และสังคมที่ส่งประโยชน์ต่อผู้มีส่วนได้ส่วนเสียจำนวนมาก Big Ideas ต้องมีวิธีการดำเนินการที่ไม่ซ้ำใคร และมีนักวิจัยร่วมทีมวิจัยจากหลากหลายสาขาวิชา รวมถึงความร่วมมือจากอุตสาหกรรม เอกชน หน่วยงานวิทยาศาสตร์ สังคม และ มหาวิทยาลัย (Henry, 2018) 

จากไอเดีย “The U.S. National Science Foundation’s 6 big research ideas,” 2019 ดังกล่าว Elsevier ใช้ข้อมูลวิจัยจากฐาน Scopus ตั้งแต่ปี 2011 ถึง 2016 และเครื่องมือ SciVal ที่วิเคราะห์สถานภาพงานวิจัยปัจจุบันของประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา โดยแบ่งข้อมูลตามภูมิศาสตร์ เช่น รัฐ หรือ สถาบัน
เป็นต้น จำนวนบทความ/งานวิจัย และผลงานที่อยู่อันดับสูงสุด (วัดจากหลายมิติ เช่น ผู้แต่ง (บุคคลและหน่วยงาน) ที่มีผลงานตีพิมพ์มากที่สุด หรือ บทความที่ได้รับการอ้างอิงมากที่สุดในสาขาวิจัยนั้นๆ หรือค่า FWCI สูงสุด เป็นต้น) (National Science Foundation [NSF], n.d.)

6 Big Research Ideas ได้แก่

Future of Work at the Human-Technology Frontier มีทั้งหมด 4 ธีม คือ Building the human-technology partnership Augmenting human performance Illuminating the socio-technological landscape และ Fostering lifelong learning คำค้นและผลสืบค้นดังรูปภาพที่ 1

Harnessing data งานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวกับ data science และวิศวกรรม หากสืบค้นด้วยคำค้น Data science research, research data infrastructure, cyberinfrastructure (คำนี้ NSF นำมาใช้เพื่อกล่าวถึง information storage system, technology repositories), data-capable workforce, mathematics, statistics, computational science, data modeling, simulation and visualization พบว่า University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign มีผลงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องสูงสุด (57) ลองลงมาคือ Indiana University (53)

Navigating the new Arctic สืบค้นด้วยคำค้น Arctic, narwhal, Arctic fox, Arctic hare พบว่า University of Alaska Fairbanks มีผลงานทั้งหมด 663 บทความ จำนวนอ้างอิงรวม 7,347 ครั้ง

Quantum leap สืบค้นด้วยคำค้น quantum mechanics, lasers, transistors, superposition, entanglement, precision sensors, quantum states พบว่า University of Pittsburgh
เป็นหนึ่งในมหาวิทยาลัยที่เป็นผู้นำงานวิจัยด้านนี้ โดยมีมีค่า FWCI สูงถึง 97

Understanding the rules of life คำสำคัญที่ใช้ และผลการสืบค้นดังรูปภาพที่ 2

Windows on the universe สืบค้นด้วยคำค้น Multi-messenger astrophysics, cosmic rays, quantum and gravitational fields, stars, black holes, neutron stars พบว่า NASA มีผลงานตีพิมพ์มากที่สุดคือ 222 บทความ และทำวิจัยร่วมกับ University of Maryland ทั้งหมด 725 งานวิจัย และมีชิ้นงานที่ได้การอ้างอิงสูงสุดที่ 182 ครั้ง
STKS จะได้นำ Big Research Ideas ของ NSF มาใช้สืบค้นผลงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องในประเทศไทย โดยใช้ฐานข้อมูลที่ สวทช. บอกรับเป็นสมาชิก เพื่อสำรวจสภาพงานวิจัยปัจจุบันของประเทศไทยในเรื่องที่เกี่ยวข้องกับทั้ง 6 Big Research Ideas ได้ใน NSTDA Style ฉบับต่อไป
