• เครื่องมือสำคัญ สำหรับการจัดการสารสนเทศ คือ การจัดหมวดหมู่และการทำดัชนี
• การจัดหมวดหมู่เป็นพื้นฐานในการจัดเนื้อหาให้เป็นระบบ  การทำดัชนีช่วยในการจัดเอกสารและลงรายการเอกสาร  ด้วยการรวมทั้งหัวเรื่องและแหล่งที่อยู่ของเอกสารเข้าด้วยกัน ถ้าการทำดัชนีมีประสิทธิภาพ จะต้องทำให้ผู้ใช้รู้ว่าต้องใช้คำสำคัญคำใดเพื่อที่จะหาสารสนเทศที่เกี่ยว ข้องกันได้ ด้วยการใช้คำศัพท์ควบคุม โดยทั่วไปแล้วมักจะใช้ taxonomy หรือศัพท์สัมพันธ์เข้ามาช่วย

• หน้าที่ของ Taxonomy ในการจัดการความรู้ก็คือ ทำให้สารสนเทศสามารถเข้าถึงได้มากขึ้น ด้วยการใช้คำศัพท์ที่ควบคุมและอย่างมีโครงสร้าง
• การสร้าง Taxonomy
  • กำหนดขอบเขตของ Taxonomy
  • มีทีมทำงานที่มีความเชี่ยวชาญด้านสารสนเทศ
  • รวบรวมคำศัพท์กว้าง ๆ ที่อธิบายตัวเนื้อหา
  • กำหนดคำที่ใช้และกำหนดคำจำกัดความโดยผู้เชี่ยวชาญหรือผู้ที่ใช้คำศัพท์
  • ใช้หลักเกณฑ์ที่มีอยู่เพื่อให้ครอบคลุมด้านอื่น ๆ ด้วย
  • เลือกคำสำคัญจากชื่อเรื่อง สาระสังเขป เนื้อหา หรือคำที่แนะนำโดยผู้จัดทำดรรชนี
  • สนับสนุนให้มีการใช้อย่างแพร่หลาย
  • ฝึกอบรมการใช้
  • ฯลฯ

• ตัวอย่าง Taxonomy ของสาขาวิชาที่ สวทช. ใช้เป็นตัวกำหนดการกำกับผลงานหรือความรู้แต่ละสาขาวิชา โดยมีการแบ่งเป็น ๓ ระดับ (ขอยกตัวอย่างเพียง ๑ สาขาวิชา)
